We said goodbye to the beach and drove the 6 hours back to Joburg today. Which means this blog is finally caught up! Munchkin did well on the drive, which included a late-ish start after going out to breakfast, and a long stop for lunch to allow for run around time. She napped twice for short periods and was in a fussy mood as a result when we got home. Whenever you travel it always takes ages to get home, get sorted, get your sorts together. As we are still "travelling" so to speak we didn't go through this but our friends did. There was family to drop off at the house who'd been housesitting/dog-sitting while we were away. There was a hot water valve that bust as we tried to give Muchkin her bath, there was lots to discuss and put away. We tried to be helpful where we could and out of the way otherwise. From my family I have learned about trying to be a concientous (sorry about spelling, I seem to have disabled spell-check on this browser) guest, not to be too much of a bore and do your share.
I want to add a last note on the beach - culinary success! After cooking for my family for so long, I admit to being very nervous about cooking for others. OH, bless him, is pretty laid back and will even eat my less successful experiments. Munchkin of course doesn't get much choice, except to eat it or not and then it's hard to say whether that is whim or preference. Also since we moved the Munchkin to her own room we have stopped entertaining, because the spare bedroom is right next to the kitchen and dining room, and the wall is barely existant. So it has been a while since I cooked for "normal people" so to speak. I was as a result, a little anxious about it. I am terrible about following recipes and all my safe dishes are cold-weather fare that would kill you when it is 33C/90F outside.
I am happy to say I was able to cook on several evenings and no one at least admitted to not liking the food. Even with a rather brazen salad experiment involving marinated broccoli which on retrospect might have been a really bad idea.

I love the idea of a "brazen salad experiment." The fact that you didn't follow it up with many more details made it sound all the more daring...

I make a broccoli salad with blue cheese, water chestnuts and green onions, yum. Blanch the broccoli, toss while warm with the rest and a nice light vinaigrette, delightful. Munchy's in her own room? that's good news! How's your sleep these days?
