NOOOOOOO!! As an expat it is *not permitted* to dislike social media. And I'm sure I'll come round to it again over time. But right now I am going through a period of intense dislike of dear old FB*. It always feels silly to me to lambaste anything that is so widely accepted in a culture - one should be tolerant. But I've been trying to go on and check what people are up to, and I just can't summon the will to care. I do love you friends and family!! Please do not take it the wrong way. It's just FB takes a lot of time. I think people don't appreciate perhaps that they do spend a goodly amount of time maintaining their FB. There is culling and pruning, when to minimize how much you see from certain people/things, when to look someone up. If you're worried about privacy or you mix biz and personal there are settings to manage. When you're on top of it all, it's a pleasure.
Let me tell you though, when you leave it for a while it grows wild like weeds in a garden. You come back to the strangest crap being given front page. It becomes a bit overwhelming. So for now I've decided to sod it all. I will check in from time to time, that is only common courtesy because it is a legit way of sharing news with people these days. If however you're looking for a good way to guarantee I will miss answering an important, time sensitive question, then FB is your sure bet.
Let me also be the first to acknowledge the irony of having written recently about feeling lonely now that so many friends have moved away and this sudden turn off from FB. :)
*FB - Face Book. C'mon, y'all knew that.

I love this confession!!!!!!!! I've heard it also from another friend recently... and my suggestion (and it's a MEAN one and so what) is to get new friends!!! that's right I've said it. if your friends have boring lives and that checking fb makes you suicidal because you realize no one is doing anything remotely interesting.... it's time for new friends! Ok ok, all joking aside, the real reason I think fb is so boring and full of trash is because people genuinely just don't understand how to use it. social media is great but its all about curation - fb is just not good about giving you the ability to really curate your environment.
Huh, curation? Friends as fine art. I just see FB as a raw feed of what friends are thinking/doing. Yes, even though my friend count is paltry compared to most, I have friended far too many people. The High School friends who I should have unfriended a week after I friended them out of curiosity. The College friends who only remind me of good times past and how time can make complete strangers of what were once good friends. I feel bad about unfriending, but perhaps I shouldn't.
Josh - that is exactly what it is! a raw feed, which requires curating. Which I can't be bothered with.
Ale, I have to get more friends just to maintain! Maybe I should take an ad out.
Once again I am provided with the kind of feedback that tells me NOT having been on FB was a good decision.
(Of course the fact that I probably don't have any friends is not relevant)
haha Dad!!! something my dad would say as well :)
