Weekend Roundup

A weekend of highs and lows but gentle ones, like a somewhat choppy sea. Meaning - we didn't get up to much.

Friday began with relief - relief I didn't have to go to the police to report stolen documents, relief I didn't have to get photos taken for a new passport, relief I didn't have to schlep over to the Consulate (I love you US government representatives overseas but it's better in this case if we don't have to see each other this way). Then it petered into annoyance. I took Munchkin to the play group near our house, where she had a great time. She mastered the little slide for the first time. Then I had to tear her away from it early because I had to take a work conference call early.

I am generally okay to take calls on mama days provided they are during Munchkin's nap. This one was with for a challenging deal so far and we haven't even signed the paper. I think it will provide me a lot of opportunities to step up and "woman up" because I've been asked to take a senior role in the project. As long as I focus on the positives it should keep me from strangling anyone. Still I really dislike being on a call while I am spending time with the kiddo - I want to give my attention 100% to wherever I am, be it work or home. But we all have to be flexible in life!

Munchkin also has an almost unnatural ability to take a gigantic poop right before a long, important conference call on mama days. She didn't disappoint Friday either. I had ANOTHER call planned right after the first one (hence testiness) but because I am a super-manager-mama, I was able to feed the child, have conf call #1, change the nappy, change all the child's clothes because said nappy had been a blow-out, and take the second call and manage to sell what I think is the right solution to a new prospect. Go Me!

Munchkin had a good nap. I shudder at the thought of the end of nap days. We didn't get the long 1 nap a day until much later, and it is a god send for getting work and house things done. We went out to the park after a snack for as long as we could stand (it is soooo cold still) then came home. Munchkin went to bed, and OH and I had burritos and watched the last Twilight film. Why? Because it was Friday, I was exhausted, and I thought the last thing I wanted to do was think. OH noticed that this film was a part 2 of 2 and asked if we shouldn't watch the first part first. To which I laughed. When we are watching sparkly vampires fly around, generally we are not too bothered with the plot. I can say it did not disappoint. And it's nice to see Washington state, such a lovely place (I think this is where it is filmed).

Saturday was a bit lame. OH was feeling coldy, but we all managed to have breakfast together and do a good food shopping - lots of staples stocked up on, always feels very productive. Annoyingly we were mean to go to a friend's kid's 1st birthday party. We knew the party was scheduled from 2-4, which is prime Muchkin nap time, but we'd cleared it with them a couple times that it'd be okay for us to come by later. Still I checked again that Saturday morning - only to be told it'd be maybe best if we don't bother to come, since their house was so far and the party would be certainly over by then. Boo. It was the main annoyance and let-down of the weekend, since we hadn't seen our friends and we'd looked forward to Munchkin running around with other kids. Don't get me wrong, I understand wanting an event hosting millions of kids to have a firm end time - but then tell me up front not to come since my kid is going to sleep through it. Ah well.

Instead I decided to make meatloaf for the first time - oh wait, ever. For some reason I had been thinking of making this randomly on and off for ages. We rarely eat meat and even more rarely red meat, though I am trying to do it more often to ensure the kiddo gets a varied iron intake and learns to digest the stuff. The basic recipe is pretty easy and I think it's pretty hard to mess it up. It has unfortunately been so very long since I last ate the stuff I couldn't even tell if it tasted like I remembered. But it got chowed down by the Munchkin so success booked in general.

Sunday we met our friend M and her daughter Z for the first time in AGES - had seen M several times but not her wonderful daughter Z for a while. How they grow quickly at this age! Z is now speaking up a storm, has no shyness at all, and in fact has become a very take charge little nearly 2,5 year old. We went to Toasty! which is a favorite of mine because it is actually open at 9 on weekends. All the hipsters straggle in around 11:30 at the earliest so it's always empty for us and the Munchkin. And the coffee and food is always good and simple. We then took the kids to a playground to run off the food until Munchkin had a melt down and we had to take her home early. We had swim lesson as usual and the child shocked us by actually jumping into the water, then chatted with my entire family (ok, spoke to middle sister earlier that day but STILL). A busy Sunday to make up for our lame Saturday.

Your weekends always sound very, very full to me compared to my relatively slow paced affairs.
